Summer 2 Internship 2018

07/05/2018

Zachary managed to finish redesigning the extending claw. While the overall mechanism is now smaller than the original, it still has some of the same issues; the claw itself is too bulky and two motors may be needed to raise or lower the arm. After building the prototype for the launcher Deepa started working on the launcher by attaching it to the base. the base that I built using mecannum wheel and four motors for each and to increase the speed of the motors I used the chains and sprockets.

Zachary is working on a prototype for the arm's turntable and lifting mechanism. Depending on the length of the lifting mechanism, he should be able to mount the arm on or near a corner of the robot. This should help resolve any mobility and dimension issues presented by the original approach, as well as make loading the launching mechanism easier. The lifting mechanism's concept can be described as "a glorified lever." The extending claw will be raised and lowered via two beams and a hydraulic piston (or two); the former will raise the arm vertically for deployment while the latter will adjust the extending claw's angle. So far, while a motor was added to the turntable, no motors are currently used in the lifting mechanism. This will be resolved some time before reaching the final version.
Deepa started working on building a launcher at an angle of 30° from the base.

Deepa spent most of the day working on building the launcher. While installing the launcher I was having difficulties with the torque required to launch the ball although I  used the high speed motor and high speed gear ratio.

07/11/2018
On Wednesday, Deepa made some changes to the gear. I changed the gear ratio to get the high torque for the launching mechanism. I also changed the motor to regular but all the adjustment was not helping on the speed and to gain the rotational speed for the launcher.

07/12/2018
Deepa was doing some research on how to solve the problems on Thursday.

07/16/2018
Deepa was working on the launcher trying to improvised some mechanism. The gear ratio I was using before was less to provide enough torque to launch a ball so I added one gear to provide more torque to the launcher.

07/17/2018
Deepa spent most of the day stabilizing the launcher mechanism.
Zachary, meanwhile, decided to switch to a winch system instead of the pneumatic cylinder. The cylinder available seemed too small use effectively. He also commented that the overall module "sort of resembles the alien from the Alien franchise."

07/18/2018
On Wednesday, Deepa tested the launcher. The angle that I used for the launching mechanism was giving trouble to target the ball to toggle a flag. The strength required to throw a ball to the greater distance was not enough. So, I spent most of the day trying to solve the problem. Also, Zachary is experimenting with the claw's placement and is considering adding a series of pulleys to the winch system.

07/19/2018
Most part of the robot has been completed until this Thursday. Deepa has implemented the launcher to the robot but I have to work on the torque and the speed and some of the feature for the launcher.

07/23/2018
On Monday, Deepa mounted the high torque gear ratio. Zachary, meanwhile, is reworking the claw to free up a cmponent for the winch.

07/24/2018
Zachary is still reworking the claw. He plans on using a servo, again, and is trying to learn how to code it. Deepa is working on the different mechanism for the catapult. The catapult I made before was not launching ball to the distance it was required to toggle the ball. The main purpose for the new catapult would be to use rubber to provide more strength which will help to launch the ball to the require distance.

07/25/2018
Deepa is still working on the new mechanism for the catapult. Zachary finished modifying the claw and is working on the winch system.

07/26/2018
We took a break from the robot to work on our team poster. Deepa worked on the programming of the robot but there was an error in the programming so I spend half of the time try to solve the problem.

07/30/2018
Deepa worked on the new mechanism for the launcher, I was not able to solve the problem that I encounter before. So I spent all Monday working on the problem.

07/31/2017
Deepa spent most of the day working the launcher. Zachary is considering going back to using a pneumatic cylinder. The string for the winch was cut and had to be tied back together, and the knot had a tendency to catch and jam the winch. Additionally, there was more string than the arm needed and would have relied mostly on gravity to lower. While the initial concern about the pneumatic cylinder was about the minimum and maximum lengths, the extending arm should be able to compensate for that issue. However, we may also need to buy a pump to use said pneumatic cylinder.

08/01/2018
Deepa was working on the catapult mechanism, the gear mechanism I was using was having difficulty with the motors I had installed. It was not providing the enough strength to the launcher to launch the ball at higher distance. So instead of using the motors for the launcher, I am planning to attach other motor with the string which will help the launcher to provide the stored energy which can be utilized during the launch.

OLD TEAM NEW TEAM (Members of the old team are only missing from the picture, not the team) Oh and we missed tyler, so here he is...... New Members: Deepa Banjara Alexandra Cortez Tyler Laursen-Carr The BCC STEM Robotics Team is developing a ball launching robot using Autodesk Inventor for design purposes and Robot C for programming purposes. The team has developed 4 major concerns about the design for the robot. First, the robot must gather the balls that are laying on the ground. Second, the robot must feed these balls to an elevator. Third, the elevator must elevate the ball to the launcher. Fourth, the launcher must be able to have varying angles in which it can launch the balls. To account for all of these factors, the designing team had to draw some sketches and ideas on the board for
